- Ensure all tracks have been recorded.
- Make notes on the best takes for each track.
- Group together tracks that need to be edited together.
- Listen to each take to identify the best performance moments.
- Comp together the best parts of each take into a single master take.
- Decide which instrument should be the reference for editing other instruments.
- Adjust and align small timing inconsistencies.
- Edit out unnecessary silences between performances.
- Apply necessary vocal tuning adjustments.
- Take care of crossfades between edits to avoid pops and clicks.
- Apply noise reduction to tracks that require it.

- Is the mix finished?
- Are you happy with how every single detail in your mix sounds?
- Are you mastering for a single track release or a full album?
- If single track, can you do a quick mastering job on the master fader in case you need to tweak your mix?
- If album, do you have all the bounces of your mixes and the line-up of the songs?
- Have you taken care of all the intro and outro fades?
- Does the mix have enough headroom to master, or do you need to turn the gain down?
- Do you have references ready to compare your master to a commercial release?
- Did you remember to use a linear phase EQ?
- Do you hear pumping in your master because of too much compression?
- Does the signal flow from each plug-in to the next have good gain structure?
- Have you taken care not to over-EQ your master?
- Are you accidentally squashing your mix with compression?
- Are you using metering tools to check your peak, RMS, and LUFS levels?
- Is your master sounding better than the mix or just louder?
- Have you referenced your master on multiple speaker systems, including a system with a subwoofer?
- Does your master have a smooth frequency response with a gentle roll-off from the high-mids?
- Are there any specific bumps or under-represented frequency areas that need to be taken care of?
- Have you added a limiter with a -1.0 dB output level for streaming?
- Have you added dither if you need it?
